FOCUS Greater Syracuse now accepting applications for Citizens Academy

FOCUS Greater Syracuse, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to fostering community engagement, announces the opening of applications for its highly acclaimed Winter/Spring 2025 Citizens Academy.
Applications will be accepted until Wednesday, Jan. 1, offering an opportunity for the community to deepen their understanding of local governance and community involvement.
The Citizens Academy is an interactive 11-week educational program designed to familiarize participants with the structure of local governments, funding mechanisms for services, and strategies for community engagement.
Through in-person sessions focused on economic vitality, social equity, and environmental health, participants gain insights essential for active civic participation.
“Our Citizens Academy has empowered over 700 graduates from diverse backgrounds, including public officials, educators, entrepreneurs and students,” said program director Alicia Ernest.
“Participants not only learn directly from government officials and community leaders but also build lasting connections with fellow residents passionate about shaping Onondaga County’s future.”
From January 29 to April 9, 2025, there will be weekly evening sessions that include a light meal and provide a platform for interactive learning and dialogue. The program tuition is $100 per participant, and limited needs-based scholarships are available.
“I relocated here in 2012 and spent the last 10 years wishing I lived somewhere else.” said Eileen Collins, founder and CEO of Admin-On-Call, LLC. “The (Citizens Academy) program introduced me to the City of Syracuse, the rich history and its beginning, and gave me a brand new perspective. I realized, although I lived in my community, I was not a part of my community.”
